Raiders of the Lost Ark Film Analysis

In this film analysis of Raiders of the Lost Ark I plan to discuss the stylistic and narrative techniques used to create the ever infamous suspense in this classic film. In this film Steven Spielberg uses more than one technique to build suspense, he also uses these various techniques to build suspense on more than one object. Spielberg builds this suspense one living and non living things, on one of which the suspense was built on Marion leaving the viewer wondering the fate of Marion. On more than once occasion you are left wondering if this really is the death of Indie’s newly reunited love just as he is faced with countless life and death situations himself building the suspense every second of the scene keeping you reeled in wondering if he will make it out of yet another brush with certain death. Another technique used by Spielberg was the music that was played to build on suspense and this music if it was picked up by the viewer of course could also be used to warn you of an upcoming event. This was noticeable in one instance at the beginning of the film when the opening credits role there is a very dark ominous orchestra type music that plays as Indie and his men walk through the shadowed and foggy forest as these elements basically sets up the film that it will have some very suspenseful scenes. The music in this film is very different of the ones that play in films these days in which words and everything are said that belong with the music when at this time period that it was made the music used was all orchestra type with violins, pianos, and other instruments of that sort that created very different feelings during films very easily as the instruments had rising and falling tones to create certain emotions and the rising and falling suspense in the film. Another way that Spielberg keeps the suspense building on Indie is that he always keeps his enemies right on his trail just ever so gaining on him little by little keeping you waiting and waiting wondering just when they will or finally catch up to him or if they even will for that matter, but this is an effective way because it keeps you waiting scene by scene anticipating the next moves of him and also his enemies. On the other hand Spielberg also has a unique way of building suspense after the enemies have caught up to Indiana Jones when he is in some type of fight scene with his adversary. Spielberg does this by creating a suspenseful situation usually one that very well could threaten the life of Indiana Jones and making a situation that might normally last thirty seconds to a minute in real life carry on for four to five minutes in the film keeping the viewer in that suspenseful situation far longer than they expect such as when he is fighting all of the robed men in the market place in Cairo he chases them for over five minutes fighting them all the while trying to find Marion only to have her supposedly perish in the explosion of the truck. But it is also very common for Spielberg to throw in a quick comedic element to these suspenseful fight scenes just to break up the ongoing suspense such as during the fight scene in the market place Indie runs up on a swordsman wielding a huge four foot blade that would be certain to cause him much trouble and instead of fighting it out with him like he traditionally does he pulls out his gun and shoots him dead as the crowd of people cheer only for Indie to immediately resume his pursue of Marion. One of the elements of the movie that suspense is heavily built on  is the medallion that Indie receives from Marion that is going to be used to locate where the Ark is buried. One way that he builds this suspense is every time that the medallion is revealed in the movie the wind begins to blow, the flames begin to flicker, the lighting on the scene almost dims as if the medallion has some sort of magical powers over the elements of nature which effectively builds suspense in the viewers mind keeping them waiting to see it used. And of course you cant forget one of the other ways Spielberg uses music to building the rising action and suspense is by playing the theme song of Indiana Jones just as Indiana is in the worst danger and you think theres just no way he could ever make it out of the situation alive he does some of the crazy things that only he himself could pull of and ends up rescuing not only himself but usually the girl hes most associated with in the film as seen in the scene in which he and Marion are most certainly trapped in the tomb full of snakes and he topples the statue only to quickly find their way out. This scene also creates suspense just in the simple fact that it is a known fact that Indie is indeed scared of snakes more than most anything he ever faces. Spielberg has his own creative ways of creating suspense whether it be the rising and falling tones of music, the ever lasting fights that keep you on the edge of your seat, or the key elements to the plot that have their own individual elements to help build the suspense. Either way all of these are the stylistic elements used in Raiders of the Lost Ark to uniquely create its suspenseful plot.

42

http://42movie.warnerbros.com/

The movie 42 is a biography about the historical baseball player Jackie Robinson and was directed by Brian Helgeland. This dramatic bibliography follows the beginning career of Jackie Robinson as he changed the world of baseball by becoming the first African American to play in the major league making his career with the Brooklynne Dodgers. From the beginning of the film we see Jackie (Chadwick Boseman) playing for the Montreal Royals minor league team. Jackie is soon called up for his chance at the big leagues by his soon to be manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) who was out to break the racial barrier in big league sports. Jackie soon realizes the hardships of being the first black man to play in at the time an all white league. Jackie has to hold his temper on a daily basis as a result to all of the racial comments and slurs that are spouted out to him, which was the whole reason why Branch picked him because he wanted a man that had the courage not to fight back against the diversity. But Jackie does break down as any man would that takes a daily verbal beating, but just as this break down happens his team begins to accept him and back him in making him a part of their team. This film shows the elements that make Jackie Robinson the key to what broke the racial barrier in Major League baseball, as many different classifications of people were accepted into the league after this feat that Jackie accomplished. I watched this film in theaters last Friday after my curiosity as to how good and accurate it would be. I like this film because the writers and director kept the story very accurate as to how all of these true events actually took place as I have researched into all of this as I am an avid baseball fan. There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like about this film other than how the ending just kind of abruptly came but this was part of the fact that they ended losing after the final game that took place in the film and might have brought down the climatic feel of the film if they had included this. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone sports fan, someone who enjoys biographies, or anyone that just likes movies based on true events that stick to the actual events.

Avatar

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/?ref_=sr_1

http://www.avatarmovie.com/

This fantasy action packed film by the name of Avatar was directed by James Cameron and made its debut in 2009. This film instantly became a hit with its extravagant animation that had yet to  be seen in any films previous to it. The film follows a paraplegic marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) that has been stationed on the moon Pandora on a very unique mission. Jake is set on a mission in which his mind is transported through the help of neurological machines into the body of one of the locals of Pandora for the soul purpose of learning their ways of life to help the marines in moving them from their homeland all for the purpose of the source of minerals that are located right directly in the center of their colony. But things become greatly complicated for Jake when he begins to fall in love with one of the beautiful natives by the name of Neytiri (Zoe Saladana) and he ultimately becomes one of the natives by following their cultural rituals bringing him closer than he ever thought possible to the them. The love he finds for the locals ultimately puts him in jeopardy with the people that he works closely with in his natural and he also puts on the line the reward of getting his legs back after the complete of the mission in which Jake has to decide which is worth more to him. I originally watched this film in theaters when it first made its debut but ive since watched it multiple times because of how much I enjoy watching it, I watched it originally because of all the mass great reviews it was receiving and it definitely lived up to that fact. I really loved the brilliant animation that James Cameron brought to life on the screen because it was something I had never seen before and honestly haven’t seen anything like it since then. There really isn’t a thing that I could pick out that I didn’t like about this film which is why I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys movies.

Spring Breakers

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2101441/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

http://www.springbreakersmovie.com/

The film Spring Breakers was directed by Harmony Korine and debuted in 2013. The plot of this film follows four girls. The girls Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) are eager to get away from the hustle and bustle of the college life and experience the outside world and a real college Spring Break but the girls must first prove how bad they really want this getaway when they realize they don’t have near enough funds for the trip. The girls quickly prove this when they rob a local restaurant after stealing one of their professors cars and burning it to the ground after completing the theft of their spring break money. After the girls make it to their spring break destination in Florida they are quickly faced with the reality of the real world when they are arrested for drug use and all thrown in jail all without any money to bail themselves out. But to the girls avail a local thug bails them out but with the intent on keeping the girls as his personal sidekicks in the drug crime that he makes his money and local fame from. The girls are soon faced with the dilemma of deciding if their safety is worth living out this dream of a never ending spring break, they must quickly decide to stay in their party paradise or return to the comforts of school and home and most of all safety. I watched this film in theaters yesterday after a few friends decided they wanted to see it I tagged along. The only thing I even somewhat liked about this film was I got a crack out of how ridiculously terrible it was at some points, the acting was terrible and the storyline was overall terrible also. But not every film we choose to see is always good so you win some you lose some. I would not recommend this film to anyone because it wasn’t worth the money in my opinion.

The Raven

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1486192/?ref_=sr_1

The film The Raven was directed by James McTeigue and was released in 2012. This film follows Edgar Allen Poe (John Cusack) and his forbidden love Emily Hamilton (Alive Eve) who’s father absolutely forbids them to see each other yet they sneak around to do so anyways. The plot quickly turns on writer Poe when the gruesome murders from his stories begin to become real life and of course the first person the police suspect is in fact himself. But the plot takes a quick turn when Poe’s love is kidnapped by the actual person carrying out these murders as ransom for Poe and the police to work together to find out her whereabouts. Poe works side by side with Detective Fields (Luke Evans) to quickly rescue Emily before time runs out. I watched this film at home a few days ago on Friday after I was curious to how good it was as I enjoyed a lot of Poe’s stories that I’ve read in classes in the past. I liked the  suspense that built throughout the film as Poe and Detective fields searched for Emily, it really put me on the edge of my seat wondering if he would find her on time or not. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending because it wasn’t that traditional end like most films like this have, it was more of a Romeo and Juliette type ending. Overall I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who likes a good suspenseful film.

Oz the Great and Powerful

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1623205/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

http://www.ozthegreatandpowerfulmovie.com/

The film Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) was directed by Sam Raimi. This film is somewhat of a remake of the older film The Wizard of Oz which debuted in 1939. The basic plot of this film follows Oz (James Franco) and Glinda the Great (Michelle Williams) as they plot to defeat the two wicked witch sisters Theodora (Mila Kunis), and Evanora (Rachel Weisz) to take back Emerald City. But the two wicked witch sisters Theodora and Evanora both have their own plan to kill Glinda the great to make them the supreme rulers of the land and they seemingly will stop at nothing to accomplish this plan even if it means killing every Tinker, farmer, and munchkin in the land to do so. Oz is faced with the complications of his own at defeating the witches with no magical power at all which his followers believe wholely that he is the great wizard told by the prophecy to defeat the witches, but Oz rises to the occasion to help the people in turn making a family of his own by the end of the story. I watched this film on Friday in theaters because I have been wanting to see it ever since I saw the first previews for it since I enjoyed the old film so much I just had to see it. I liked this film because it was like an updated version of the older film which I really enjoyed so this modern version was even more enjoyable to me with the brilliant animation they used but also kept it simple at times like the original. The only thing I didn’t like was some of the acting at some points but most films seem to have that these days. I would most definitely recommend this film to anyone who liked the classic version because it was greatly similar with a modern touch.

21 & Over

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1711425/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

http://21andovermovie.tumblr.com/

The film 21 & Over was directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. This film follows three childhood friends Miller (Miles Teller), Casey (Skylar Astin), and Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) who are reuniting after ending up at three separate colleges after high school to celebrate Jeff’s twenty first birthday after the three have been separated for the past two years not keeping in close touch like they once did in high school. The story to this film comes with many different exciting points to it from everything to crazed sorority girls, wild buffalos trampling students, all the way to the fact that Jeff Chang’s crazy father puts death threats on the two who are trying to persuade his son on going out the night before his med school exam that determines his whole future after his college career. I watched this film in theaters Monday night because I was curious as to how good this film was after seeing numerous previews of it. I liked this film cause it had all kinds of crazy incidents that continued happening that kept you laughing from the beginning until the very end. The only thing I didn’t like about this film was that some of the acting from a few of the actors was pretty poor but that happens in some films I guess. But overall I would recommend this film to anyone who likes a good comedy.

Viewing this film by breaking it down scene by scene without a doubt gave me a new insight to it. I have tried watching this film on multiple occasions in the past and have trouble everytime following the basic plot of it but by breaking it down the narrative of it was much easier to follow. The form of this film gave you an insight to how the film could possibly end right off the bat which instantly pulled you in giving you that sense of wonder and right as it pulls you in the film cuts right over to many months earlier before any of the opening minutes of the film ever take place. This is a great tactic in that it pulls you in and instantly make you curious about how the characters got theirselves in this predicament leaving you trying to put the clues together the entire film only to turn the entire thing upside down by revealing that the two main characters of the film are actually the same person all along. The form of this film has a cause and effect that push the motivation of each character on through the film in that one thing that happens motivates another action that we may not know at the time but yet we expect something to later happen as a result of an incident that took place earlier in the film. But on the other hand the film almost ends with open ending that leaves you wondering did Tyler really end up living, did him and Marla stay together, was Tyler persecuted for the damage to the city and people that he unknowingly did during his alter ego taking over, not exactly the classical ending that most films come with but at the same time an ending that still keeps you satisfied with the unfolding events that took place. Thus the narrative of this story hold the cause and effect type story line beginning with Tyler meeting Marla and later him meeting his alternate personality Tyler Durden in which brings out his malicious side if you will which ends up creating Fight Club which leads to project mayhem only in turn leading the final plan of his alternate personality of blowing up the credit card companies ending all debt known by the people. All in all this film does have somewhat of a classic narrative with a non traditional twist and ending to it that definitely give it a unique presence of its own like a lot of films that have recently debuted.

Mise en Scene

1. Hot Tub Time Macine

2. Released in 2010

3. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1231587/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

4. Directed by- Steve Pink, Production Designer- Bob Ziembicki, Art Direction- Kelvin Humenny and Jeremy Stanbridge, Costume Designer- Dayna Pink.

5. This is my favorite film for costume for costume and set design because after they are transported back in time using the hot tub they appear in the 80’s. And in my opinion they did a great job on everything from adding in the poofy hair styles and the jerry curl to the leg warmers all the way to outfitting everyone in the ski scenes to having the mid 80’s attire with the bright neon colors, even as far as making the ski lodges the authentic look from the 80’s with all correct music from this time period.

1. I would say Zach Galifianakis always seem to play an absolutely real feeling character in most all of his films especially in The Campaign when he plays Marty Huggins he seems to almost take on the persona of that reserved guy who was always the one picked on yet in mid film he is able to change to that guy that everyone loves in the attempt to win the election.

2. The realistic acting I have seen so far definitely takes place in the Twilight series of movies with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison who just act awkwardly throughout most of the films.

3. One of the actors I like to see in films is of course Zach Galifianakis because he always seems to portray that character that you anticipate to see in everyone of his films and yet he is so great at playing so very different roles from film to film and always seems to play that role spot on.

4. An example of stylized acting would be Eddie Murphy in his roles in Nutty Professor, Nutty Professor the Klumps, and Coming to America cause his acting styles in these films are far over the top and so outlandish it almost amazes you that its even him. And in these films he also plays multiple characters all with their own over the top personalities in which he plays all of them differently.

Top Gun

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/?ref_=sr_2

This film Top Gun that made its debut in 1986 was directed by Tony Scott. Top Gun follows a young but highly skilled Navy pilot who goes by the name of Maverick (Tom Cruise) and his gunner Goose (Anthony Edwards) who soon after the start of the film enter into Top Gun flight school to compete to be the best pilot in their class. The young pilot goes through trial and tribulation in this film in more than one aspect starting with his new competitors in this competition to be the best in the form of Iceman (Val Kilmer) and his gunner Hollywood (Whip Hubley) who provide stiff competition from the beginning. Maverick also tries his hand and courting a young lady by the name of Charlie (Kelly McGillis) who he quickly finds out is his civilian teacher at the Top Gun school making their situation that much more complicated right from the get go. Maverick soon suffers a heart breaking loss when he looses his best friend and gunner Goose in a training accident killing him instantly upon the attempt at ejecting himself from the plane, this turns out to be one of Maverick most disheartening loses in the film challenging him in a sense to see if he can rise to the occasion and do it for his lost friend Goose. I watched this film at home on my tv yesterday as I haven’t watched it in a long while and it happens to be one of my favorite movies as this is why I chose to do a film log over it. I liked this film because it is a true classic, even though I might not have been around during its original debut I do know that I fell in love with it from the first time I watched it because of the patriotic sense that it gives you. The film shows accomplishments and downfalls in more than one aspect and makes you feel for each character as the go through these ups and downs. There isn’t a lot that I have to complain about this film other than the fact that I wish it was longer or came with a sequel that was just as equally good as the first. I would definitely recommend this film to just about anyone that enjoys watching an old classic film.
